Bits do not like high speed with light pressure. Drill bits last a pretty long time under the correct operator so if you're constantly dulling a bit you may need to investigate your technique. If the side flutes are burnt or damaged, chunk the bit, it's no good. You have a pretty cheap bit there and it will likely not hold the edge for more than a few holes. This can also be done with a grinder and cuttoff wheel but you need a partner you can trust to hold the grinder steady to avoid cutting your hand off. Look at the cut edge sideways to make sure you have enough angle so contact isn't made at the rear of the flute cutting area. With the cutting angle on one side of the bit oriented to follow the wheel angle, press the edge of the bit against the wheel and gently create a new edge. Match the original angle and sort of skeet a bit off until you get the point back giving it a roll up towards the end. Set the tool rest on your bench grinder so it is offset 10 degrees from the wheel interface. I do this one of two ways but it does take a good and and a steady hand. Took him to the grinder the next day and had him practice till a sharp drill came out and put in an order for a drill Doctor just in case. I could literally hear him destroying the bits. Idiot working with me destroyed the other 7 and had the gall to ask for mine as I was sitting catching up on some paperwork. By day 4 of the project, I was stil happily using that set. Took one and locked it away for my use only. Had the workshop manager lock away most but left 8 complete sets in the store. Went to break up some crates for sorting holders and sat there for three days just sharpening bits. By the fourth bit I grabbed that roughly looked the size and seeing it utterly destroyed, I took the box. So eager to start, I get there and grab a drill from the tools tore and get handed a box of drill it's.
